“Viktor Chernomyrdin has left us. This is a great loss for our entire country.

Viktor Chernomyrdin was a symbol of the new Russia. He travelled a long way in life and served his country the whole way, President Dmitry Medvedev said.

PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA DMITRY MEDVEDEV: Viktor Chernomyrdin has left us.
This is a great loss for our entire country. He was a symbol of the new Russia. Together with our country – a new country – he made many decisions, sometimes difficult decisions, and devoted his entire life to serving his homeland.

He truly was a people’s prime minister and his life journey was long and full of events. He was one of Gazprom’s founders and devoted much effort to the country’s gas sector. He was prime minister during a very difficult time, a time when our country’s economy was seriously undermined and tremendous effort was needed simply to survive and ensure that our people had at least the basic needs in life.

He served as Russia’s ambassador to Ukraine. This was a difficult and at times contradictory period in our relations, but Mr Chernomyrdin always defended Russia’s interests in clear and well-argued fashion, and with the sense of humour that was such an inherent part of his nature. The restoration of good relations between Russia and Ukraine today owes much to Mr Chernomyrdin’s work over these last years.

He was a warm-hearted man of great charm and simplicity, open to all. We will remember him.

7 Oct 2010 - Moscow - World Conference of Compatriots

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev sent his greetings to the participants and guests of the World Conference of Compatriots entitled The Contribution by Compatriots to Russia's Modernisation. Opportunities for Developing Partnerships.

The message reads, in part: “Your forum has an important theme: Russia’s modernisation and technological development. To address these major challenges we will require the effort and energy of our compatriots, their creative, intellectual and professional potential. Contemporary Russia is open to all who identify with its fate, are interested in its prosperity and are prepared to contribute to its progressive development. Today there is a great need for your ideas and proposals related to the growth of innovation, the rise of the social sphere and the improvement in the quality of life. I am confident that the recommendations presented during the conference will serve to unite our efforts in these areas.” The World Conference of Compatriots is held in Moscow on October 7-8, 2010, and features representatives of the academic and professional community from 70 countries.
